Sculpture

Organic forms and the marine environment are the basis of this series of wooden sculptures. Fish, shells, seeds, and eggs all exhibit symmetry and allow for “flow” whether in air or in water. Brancusi’s Bird in Space series, in which he reduces the birds into the essence of flight rather than the physical details of feather and beak, had always intrigued me, but it wasn’t until I began spending significant time in and by the ocean, that I began seeing fishing equipment, buoys, boats, ropes and especially marlin spikes (traditionally used to splice ropes) as inspiration for a similar type of essential abstraction.
